Both poker tournaments and poker ring games attract a large number of participants and both are kind of live games. But poker ring games are more so because they may often go on for an indefinite period of time and without all players needing to register or required to follow rules of joining and leaving the play. This difference in the format of playing has also resulted in difference in strategies of gameplay in poker tournament and poker ring games.

A major difference between these two formats of poker games is that when a tournament game is being played using the betting structure of ante and blind wagers, the progress in the tournament increases the betting structure at regular intervals. However, in ring poker games played for cash the structure of ante and blind bets remain unchanging. Another important distinction is that in tournaments, a selective types of poker games are on offer whereas in cash or ring poker games, players can choose any form or variant of games they may want to play subject to the permission by the casino house. If the game is being played online, then the choice of variants of play is only restricted by the gaming software of that site.

Among other differences, the most prominent is the allowing of straddles and chops in ring poker games, something that are prohibited according to tournament playing rules. So, a cash game allows live straddle which means the player with privilege of first action may post a double amount of big blind and bet again if unchallenged by any raise. It also allows chopping by players where the participants mutually agree to retract their blind bets if no one lese has placed any wager, a situation that stops the casino house from collecting its usual rake. Such options are expressly disallowed in poker tournaments.

Ring games are those poker games, which are alternatively known as cash games or live action games, where real chips and money are staked and played for by the gamblers and there is no set time when such games may get over with players are free to join or leave the game as per their discretion. This is in contrast to the most poker tournaments where the games are played with tournament chips which don’t have any value outside the precincts of the competition. Moreover poker tournaments are played with a end format where all the participants are registered and usually it is only one player ho emerges as the champion.

In ring poker games, players are free to join a game by taking the buy-in or leave the game and get the payout while there is a gap of play during two hands, but under no condition can he take away any portion of his winnings from the live game table. So, if the player’s buy-in was $200 and he wins another $200, his total chip stack stands at $400. he cannot ‘go south’ and remove his buy-in from his stack so that this portion of his money remains safe and is not lost in the progress of the game. He may, however, choose to leave the game and take away his entire winnings. If he wants to play again, he has to rejoin by again paying $200 buy-in.

The table stakes rules are also applicable in ring poker games. So, if someone is playing a hand and in midst of the game intends to stake more amount of money for his bets and puts the extra cash on the game table directly from his own billfold, it is not allowed. However he may use his money like this to wager in subsequent hands of play.

In poker games, players can engage in manipulation to protect their interest of winning the pot by influencing pot odds and discouraging opponents. So, often a player may stake a wager when his hand is already made so that the other players may get induced to give up even before they have availed themselves of the chance of improving their hands by drawing.

In a no limit Texas hold ‘em game, where one poker player has a made hand and considers winning the pot. Now, if the board has such cards that would allow a flush draw, the player can make a high bet so that even if his opponent really had a flush draw hand, that player would hesitate to call the bet. The situation can become complicated if the player has a doubt that his opponent has a decent enough hand without availing the flush draw, then the first player may be confused regarding what would be the optimal bet amount he should put on stake. So, in a $100 pot game played one-to-one, the player bets $50, the pot size becomes $150 and the opponent must now call $50, making his pot odds 3:1 or 25%. If it is turn round and the opponent has a flush draw, he still has a negative expectation and is unlikely to call. The only reason why the opponent may call is if he is sure the first player will bet again in river round even after he has made his flush hand.

Experienced poker players has analytically examined and formulated a theory regarding how bluffing strategy is most effective in relation to pot odds. So, if a pot value is currently $50 and a player decides to wager $50, the pot odds of the opponent for making a call would be 2-to-1. In this case the first player should optimally bluff one out of three times. However this bluffing frequency theory also depends on factors like player’s style, tight or loose, since loose poker players are more likely to call a bet than a tight player.

In poker games, sometimes situations occur when a player is faced with a condition where with the best hand, all he can win is the minimum, but if he does not have the best hand, he not only loses but also loses maximum. This is reverse implied pot odds and the situation is best illustrated by aggressive poker players who by their action of betting and raising stand to win the ongoing pot which is minimum amount but if they lose, the loss becomes maximum as it includes the total amount of the existing pot size and their call and raise wagers. Moreover, reverse implied pot odds situation may also arise when a player has a hand with practically no chance of bettering it as he considers his hand the best possible at that stage of the game and even then his opponent goes on betting. If now the opponent’s hand is weak and he is only playing bluff, the player calling his bet would make him fold. But if the opponent has a strong hand, he can go on betting in response to the player’s betting action which means the extra wagers have to paid by the player in order to stay in the hand.

If in a limit game of Texas hold ‘em, a player has no chance of bettering his already made hand and his opponent calls $10 wager for a $40 pot in the turn round. With the opponent bluffing, the player expects no more bets from him if he responds, but in case the opponent has a decent hand, he may call a further bet of $10 in the last round. If the first player wins, he only wins the pot value of $40, but if he loses he loses both the $10 bets made in turn and river rounds. Since the player is staking $20 to win a guaranteed $40, his reverse implied pot odds is 2:1 or 33.33%. The first player will have a positive expectation only if his opponent’s hand has over 33.33% chance of being weak.

Pot odds in a poker game may not always be fixed and can also be calculated on expected value. So, if a player has a drawing had whereby he can improve his had to a winning one by drawing an out, then his pot odds is estimated by the projected value of his hand while he faces betting action. This is arrived at by the ratio of the pot odds of the player to the odds of his drawing an out giving him the hand with which he can win the pot. If the player’s chances of drawing a winning out are higher than his pot odds, he is said to have a positive expectation and in case the pot odds is higher, then the player has a negative expectation, in which situation he stands to win less dough than that he spends as his bat amount for calling.

In poker games, the implied pot odds allow for projected betting action in subsequent stage of play while estimating the pot odds. To calculate implied odds situations are taken into account where the player does not lose any additional wagers if he fails to draw an out and folds his hand along with the chances that if he does make a draw, he invariably stands to win the additional wagers. This means that the player minimizes his loss and maximizes his gain and so, the extra wagers he expects to win is added to the ongoing pot size giving a modified value of the pot called implied pot.

In turn round of a Texas Hold ‘em game, the pot size is $10 and a player, with a drawing hand and four possible winning cards, must make $1 call. If there is more betting action, then the player stands to lose money by calling with 10-to-1 pot odds. But if the opponent is expected to call in response to this player’s call in the river round, then he has the option to fold without losing any money. Thus the implied pot odds becomes 11-to-1 and has a positive expectation value.
